Funeral Poems
Poems can play a special part in celebrating the life of a loved one. Many people find that they can express the loss of someone close to them far better in poetry than any other way.
During a memorial or service, many compose their own poems, draw from classics or find one of our suggestions a strong declaration. Please read some of our favourites to the left.
These are just a few of the many poems we have in our library – we are happy to provide you with a book to help you make the perfect selection.

‘Coo-ee is called why don’t you come
Australia flagged her cherished son’s
As mates they drilled to a drum at dawn
Friendships for life were forever formed
Destined to fight in a distant land
Always ready to lend a hand
The Digger’s legend is second to none
As always prepared a job well done
In life willing to give without regret
In passing remembered, lest we forget.’

I heard your voice in the wind today
and I turned to see your face;
The warmth of the wind caressed me
as I stood silently in place.
I felt your touch in the sun today
as its warmth filled the sky;
I closed my eyes for your embrace
and my spirit soared high.
I saw your eyes in the window pane
as I watched the falling rain;
It seemed as each raindrop fell
it quietly said your name.
I held you close in my heart today
it made me feel complete;
You may have died…
but you are not gone
you will always be a part of me.
As long as the sun shines…
the wind blows…
the rain falls…
You will live on inside of me forever
for that is all my heart knows.
By Judy Burnette
A brief moment of darkness
was all that I knew,
before Heaven’s Gate
came into my view.
Loved ones and friends
I had missed for many years,
welcomed me with open arms
and many happy tears.
All the hurt, fear and pain
that I have ever known,
is gone from my life,
I am finally home.
I gazed upon the Lord’s
sweet smiling face,
and for the first time in my life
I knew and felt His grace.
I know that you miss me,
but please dry your eyes.
I will always be watching and loving you
from my home in the sky.
A cool breeze on your face,
a touch of light rain,
I will send as a reminder
that we will be reunited again.
Life on earth is but one
brief moment in time,
I am finally home,
Eternity is mine.

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
We never wanted memories,
We only wanted you.
A million times we needed you,
a million times we’ve cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place
no one can ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
We’d walk the path to heaven
to bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see,
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.
An angel lived among us,
A gift from God above.
She showered us with kindness
And shared with us her love.
She cherished every moment
With the man who was her life;
Walking hand in hand together,
Facing life with all its strife.
She loved her children dearly,
Each one a different way,
Nestled close within her heart.
Though, now, she’s far away.
She’s gone to live with Jesus.
But, she’s here with us, today,
Smiling down on every one of us,
And telling us she’s O.K.

Don’t think of her as gone away
her journey’s just begun…
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days or years.
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched,
for nothing loved is ever lost
and she was loved so much.

As I sit and hold your hand,
I think of how I became a man.
It was your love that nourished me
And made me what I chose to be.
Now that you will soon be leaving,
Know that I will spend a lifetime grieving;
For you, my mother, gave to me
A lifetime of love so naturally.
Reflecting on memories of our past,
The love you gave will always last.
Always mindful of my needs,
To succeed in life you planted seed.
The hardest thing I’ll ever do,
Is to say goodbye when your life is through;
For you have been my dearest friend,
And it breaks my heart to see it end.
By Pauline Hamblin
I feel you in the morning
When at first I awake
Your thought is with me
With each decision I make
You’d been around forever
Since the first breath I took
Now I have to go on alone
But for love, I need not look
Cause by what you bestowed
In our short time together
Will last in my heart
Forever and ever
Although you’ve left
And now walk above
I’m never alone
I’m wrapped in your love
Enjoy now your long waited reward
Feel peace that your love continues on
What was taught to me, will be taught to mine
Cause you live on in me even after you’ve gone.

Mum
You raised us kids
And always lived right.
We were safe and warm,
Before you slept each night.
You worked hard
All through your life
As a friend, a mother,
And a faithful wife.
You weren’t rich, or poor
Or even famous.
But you did your best
And always loved us.
Life’s not easy
Nor is it fair.
Now you’re older
With gray in your hair.
You have always cared,
And done for others.
So here’s a salute,
To my Mother.

Mum made the days bright and happy,
And the sun shone all around.
She made everything cheerful, and on her face
Was a sweet peaceful smile.
On [Month] the [Day] life was not so kind
And dark clouds of death gathered.
But her love brought us days of comfort and joy,
And her life made it all worthwhile.
By Melton Culberth
I awake each morning to start a new day
But the pain of losing you never goes away.
I go about the things I have to do
And as the hours pass I think again of you.
I want to call you and just hear your voice
Then I remember that I have no choice
For you are not there and now my heart cries
Just to see you again to tell you goodbye
To say Mum I love you and I always will
And hope that much of you, in me you’ve instilled.
The day that you left I just didn’t know
That you were going where I couldn’t go.
And now all my memories of you are so dear
But gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here.
Who now can hear me when I need to cry?
It so hard to tell you “Mum goodbye.”
Someday I know all will be well
And I’ll see you again with stories to tell
Of how you were missed and how we have grown
And how good it is to finally be home.
Until then my memories of you I’ll keep near
And I’ll pass them on to those who are dear.
I miss you Mum.

God saw that she was getting tired
And a cure was not meant to be
So he put his arms around her
And whispered “come with me”
With tearful eyes we watched her suffer
And watched her fade away
Although we loved her dearly
We could not make her stay
A golden heart stopped beating
And a warm loving heart to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
That he only takes the best
By Christopher Warner
I thought I saw her face today
In the sparkle of the morning sun.
And then I heard the angel say
“Her work on earth is done.”
I thought I heard her voice today
Then laugh her hearty laugh.
And then I heard the angel say
“There’s peace little one at last.”
I thought I felt her touch today
In the breeze that rustled by.
And then I heard the angel say
“The spirit never dies.”
I thought that she had left me
For the stars so far above.
And then I heard the angel say
“She left you with her love.”
I thought that I would miss her
And never find my way.
And then I heard the angel say
“She’s with you every day.”

Loss of a Spouse
As I sleep you roam through my mind
Sweet loving best friend of mine.
I close my eyes and soon
you will be there
to hold my hand and stroke my hair.
You take away my pain and all my fears
You bring me laughter then bring me tears
I have no doubts and I’m never scared
just knowing the fact that you will soon be here
You gave me strength when I had none
you gave me courage when the day was done
you will always be in this heart of mine
My best friend till the end of time……

It is not far away, the place to which they go.
It is just beyond the starlit skies;
it’s where the moonbeams grow –
And night is day and day is night and sorrow comes no more.
Where love abides beyond the tides upon a golden shore,
And we must wait here for awhile – until it’s time to go.
Although we carry on, we mourn, because we miss them so;
And through the years, GOD dries our tears… He said, “My peace I give”.
Oh GOD… We thank you for your help and the chance to live

Loss of a Father

- When I Lost You
- Don’t Grieve
- He is Gone

- Greatly Missed
- A Place To Rest
- Five Minutes
Feel no guilt in laughter,
He knows how much you care.
Feel no sorrow in a smile
That he’s not here to share.
You cannot grieve forever,
He would not want you to.
He’d hope that you would carry on
The way you always do.
So talk about the good times
And the ways you showed you cared.
The days you spent together,
All the happiness you shared.
Let the memories surround you,
A word someone may say
Will suddenly recapture
A time, an hour, a day.
That brings him back as clearly
As though he were still here,
And fills you with the feelings
That he is always near.
For if you keep those memories
You will never be apart
And he will live forever
Locked safe within your heart.

I wish I could see you one more time
Come walking through the door
But I know that is impossible
I will hear your voice no more.
I know you can feel my tears
And you don’t want me to cry
Yet my heart is broken because I can’t understand why
someone so precious had to die.
I pray that God will give me strength
And somehow get me through
As I struggle with this heartache
That came when I lost you.
By Author Unknown
Today I left my loved ones
and as I go I pray,
Lord don’t let them grieve too much,
because I’ve died today.
Let there be no wailing
echoing the halls,
The same halls that held laughter
and answers to my calls.
I pray they all take comfort
accepting the true way,
And listen when I tell them
these three things today.
Love will be forever,
a promise that will last.
So love me more than ever
now my time with you has passed.
And last of all remember
the glowing love to be,
When our eyes meet once again,
for all eternity.

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

A special Dad is hard to find,
You Dad I’m keeping in my mind,
I wished you could have stayed forever,
But I will never forget you oh not ever.
If dreams weren’t dreams and dreams came true,
I wouldn’t be here I’d be with you.
Distance is one thing that keeps us apart,
But Dad you will always remain in my heart.
A special smile, a special face, a special someone I can’t replace,
I love you and I always will,
You filled a space that no one will ever replace.
By Emma Cartwright
A Fathers touch, A Daddy’s kiss,
A grieving Daughter, You’re greatly missed.
An empty house, An empty chair,
A Fathers love, No longer there.
A broken heart, Tear filled eye,
Another soul to fill the sky.
Many memories in my mind,
Some I laugh, Some I cry.
The times we shared, The laughs we had,
Things I miss when I think of you Dad.
Realising that’s all I have to hold on too,
Only memories, Of what once was you.
Missing your laugh, I will never again hear.
That is the reality that fills me with so much fear.
No more smile on your face,
No more warmth of your embrace.
The last hug, The last kiss,
The last “goodbye” leaves me with one last wish…
To have you Dad, here today,
Never to leave your Daughter this way.
A Father’s touch, A Daddy’s kiss,
A grieving Daughter, YOU’RE GREATLY MISSED!
By Amy Richards
God looked down on your body,
So tired from hanging on,
From a life that was overwhelming you,
And wanted back His son.
So he took away the air you breathe,
And gave you what was best,
A place to be at peace,
A final place to rest.
By Alison
If I only had five minutes the day you passed away,
I would have had time to tell you all the things I needed to say.
I never got to tell you how much you mean to me,
Or that you were the best dad, better than any man could be.
The last time that I talked to you
I wish I would have known.
I would have said I love you,
and kept you on the phone.
If I only had five minutes,
the morning you passed away,
I’d give you one last hug so tight and see your great big smile.
I’d tell you that I don’t think I could live without you,
not even for awhile.
I’d kiss your cheek and take your hand and tell you it’s okay to go
And tell you that I’ll miss you,
more than you’ll ever know.
But you were gone so quickly,
One last car ride you’d take.
Before you even knew it,
you were standing at heavens gate.

Loss of a Child or Infant
My silent child
our precious baby,
Close to my heart
I’ll keep you with me.
An important job
God has for you,
There is love to give,
and work to do.
He needs an angel
strong but small,
To shine light on many
and give love to all.
Before you go
I give you this,
half my heart
and one last kiss.
We’ll miss you dearly
that we know,
But by God you were
chosen,
So to heaven, you must go
